Best Places to See Fall Foliage in Connecticut

The Litchfield Hills

Named one of the most scenic driving destinations in the U.S. by National Geographic, the Litchfield Hills region is home to the picturesque town of Kent. The small, quaint town is home to some wonderful shops, restaurants, art galleries, as well as numerous state parks for a full New England fall experience. 

The Kent Falls State Park, home to Connecticut’s highest waterfall, has a path that leads to the summit where visitors will find scenic views of Litchfield Hills. Don’t forget to explore the Bull’s Bridge, the historic covered bridge that crosses the Housatonic river. 

A Litchfield Hills gem, Mohawk State Forest, has a lookout tower that provides breathtaking views of the Taconic, Berkshire, and Catskill mountain ranges. The Macedonia Brook State Park, also located in the Litchfield Hills, is home to the Macedonia Ridge Trail for spectacular fall foliage. 

Hartford/Central Region

The state capital region is surrounded by several state parks, including the Talcott Mountain State Park. Visitors can climb to the top of the 165-foot tower Heublein Tower located within the park and take in the sweeping Fall views of the Farmington River Valley and even several neighboring states.

Another nearby option is Penwood State Park which offers 800 acres of four-season fun. Visitors can hike up a 10.3 mile loop trail to an overlook and marvel at Fall in the Nutmeg State. 

Mystic, Connecticut

This charming waterfront village is a must-visit during the fall. Visitors can cruise down the Mystic River and marvel at the beautiful autumn colors that frame the landscape. You can also take a leisurely drive or walk along the river, shop at the charming boutiques lining its shores and leaf peep along scenic River Road and through Old Mystic.

Connecticut River Valley

Go aboard the Chester – Hadlyme Ferry and enjoy New England fall foliage in all its glory. While the ferry ride lasts a few minutes, the view of Gillette Castle from the Connecticut River is a must-see. After the ferry, head on over to Gillette Castle itself and take in the panoramic views of the 184-acre park and the Connecticut River Valley that it is located in. 

Further down the valley in Essex, you can board the 2.5-hour Essex Steam Train & Riverboat. Starting at the historic 1892 station, this vintage steam train travels along the river through the countryside and ends at the Deep River Landing for an hour-long riverboat cruise, providing a breathtaking view of fall foliage along the way.
